BRILHO Strengthens Leadership and Social Inclusion

Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) is one of the key pillars of the BRILHO Programme, which aims to drive the growth of the off-grid energy sector by promoting sustainable energy solutions and fostering a more inclusive and equitable ecosystem. The energy sector has traditionally been characterised by low female participation, particularly in technical and leadership roles. However, BRILHO-supported companies are challenging this paradigm and achieving significant progress: currently, 39% of their employees are women, with 23% holding technical positions—figures that exceed the sector’s average in Africa, estimated at 20% to 25%. To consolidate this transformation and continue creating opportunities for all, BRILHO actively invests in professional capacity building and the adoption of more inclusive organisational practices.

As part of this effort, from 4 to 7 February 2025, the city of Nampula hosted an in-person session of the Leadership, Gender Equality, and Social Inclusion course, organised by BRILHO in partnership with SDO Moçambique. The training brought together 14 managers and employees from the energy sector, representing key institutions such as FUNAE – Nampula Delegation, BRILHO’s portfolio companies (Ignite, GLP, and Burn), the Industrial and Commercial Institute of Nampula, and TL Comunicações. Participants explored best practices for gender inclusion in the energy sector, the positive impact of diversity in organisations, and strategies to promote a more equitable corporate culture. In addition, the course examined ways to encourage greater access for women to technical and leadership roles, ensuring more sustainable and representative sectoral growth.

Towards a More Inclusive and Sustainable Energy Sector

The energy transition is not only about technology and innovation but also about social justice and equal opportunities. Through customized trainings, allocation of financial incentives for the technical training of women and technical assistance for the design and implementation of inclusive organisational policies, the BRILHO Programme, implemented by SNV Mozambique, reinforces its commitment in influencing the transformation of the country’s energy sector— to becoming more inclusive, innovative, and sustainable.

With the support of the Governments of the United Kingdom and Sweden, BRILHO continues to drive these changes, ensuring that off-grid energy is not only accessible but also a catalyst for inclusion and development across society.
